Day 36 - Rovaniemi

Day 36 Sunday September 18

Rovaniemi is the capital city of Finland's northernmost province, Lapland. Almost totally destroyed during World War II, today it’s a modern city known for being the "official" home town of Santa Claus, and for viewing the Northern Lights.

We visited the Santa Claus village, an amusement park very near to our hotel. There is Santa's work place, post office, souvenir shops, cafes etc. A line marking the latitude for the Arctic Circle is a good photo stop.

Along with the two of us, there are 4 other friends who have crossed the 66º North and 66º South.

The fortunate ones who have crossed
the Arctic and Antarctic Circle

Later we had a picnic lunch in a lovely setting by the riverside. The gurgling waters of the flowing river, the rustling leaves on the trees, Tushar singing on his guitar and hot bhuttas cooked on a wooden fire!!!! What more can one ask for?

Traveled today 78 kms
Total distance 9493 kms
