Day 38 - Nordkapp
Day 38 Tuesday September 20
Today is the pinnacle (literally and figuratively) of the trip. We are going to Nordkapp (also called North Cape) which is a cape on the northern coast of Norway. The European route E69 highway has its northern terminus here that makes it the northernmost point in Europe that can be accessed by car and makes the E69 the northernmost public road in Europe. The cape includes a 307-metre-high cliff (1,007 ft) with a large flat plateau on top, where weather permitting, one can watch the midnight sun and views of the Barents Sea to the north. North Cape Hall, a visitor centre, was built in 1988 on the plateau. It includes a café, restaurant, post office, souvenir shop, a small museum, and video cinema. The North Cape is the point where the Norwegian Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean meets the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean.
After driving in wet and windy conditions over the past week, the Gods blessed us with a bright sunny day. The chilly winds from the Arctic Ocean swept over us and the temperature dipped 3⁰ C but the breathtaking views and the thrill of being there lit a warm glow in our hearts. The excitement was palpable as hundreds of pictures were clicked. It was one of the most exhilarating moments of our trip. We walked around the flat grounds, saw the exhibits, the mini IMAX style video cinema and had sandwiches for lunch.
