Day 40 - Northern Lights
Day 40 Thursday September 22
Hermes II was built in 1917 and was originally a cargo boat for fish, coal, animals and building materials. She was completely renovated in 2019 with modern technology and facilities. We took a fjord and photo cruise around Tromsø on this authentic old wooden boat.
We had lunch at Peppe Pizza, did some retail therapy and came back to the hotel for a quick power nap.
Tromsø is in the centre of the northern lights’ oval, which means we can see the northern lights even when the activity is low. The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, is a natural phenomenon. It is unpredictable and surprising. It can appear almost out of nothing, fade away and reappear in just minutes. Experiencing the northern lights is something you will remember for the rest of your life.
We booked the 9 pm cruise. It was very cold and the wind on the deck froze my fingers. We had almost lost hope when the dancing green light of the aurora showed up and stayed with us for about half an hour. What a magnificent spectacle is was!!!!
