Day 51 - Copenhagen
Day 51 Monday October 3
Copenhagen is Denmark's capital and largest city. It sits on the coastal islands of Zeeland and Amager. Denmark is a parliamentary representative democracy, a constitutional monarchy with Queen Margrethe II as the head of state. The current queen happens to be a cousin of the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth II of Britain. Historically the country was quite big but over the years they fought with virtually all their neighbours and as a result lost a lot of land. Now it's a small country of 6 million people of which 25% live in Copenhagen.
Our city tour was by coach, there are a number of palaces in the city, we saw the Rosenberg palace, the Parliament and some other sights. Denmark is a maritime country with shipping and fishing being important to the economy. Maersk, the largest container company in the world has it's HQ here.
There was a power plant across the river that generates electricity for the city whose roof is made as a ski slope. There are no mountains in Denmark so they have created an artificial slope for recreation!!!!
We also took pictures with the iconic Little Mermaid statue. The Little mermaid has been vandalized a few times. She has had her head chopped off, her arms were sawed out twice, once she was also blown up with explosives. But each time the city has restored it and she now sits pretty of the edge of the river.
There are many churches and the Marble church is one that has the biggest dome in Scandinavia.
