Day 52 - Zipping on the Autobahn

Day 52 Tuesday October 4

Today we go to The Netherlands, country # 19 via Germany, country # 18. It was also the longest single day drive of our entire trip. We covered 930 kms in 12 hours with a lunch break and 2 fuel stops.

We went over The Great Belt Bridge, which is a road suspension bridge and a railway tunnel between Zealand and the small island Sprogo in the middle of the Great Belt, and a box-girder bridge for both road and rail traffic between Sprogo and Funen. The total length is 18 kms.

We drove on eating up the distance quickly thanks to the autobahns of Germany. I did reach a top speed of 192 for a minute or so and cruising between 140 to 160 kmph for more than one hour without touching the brakes or accelerator was a great experience. The autobahn is like a racing track with each car going faster than the other. Cars were zipping past me so easily that I rechecked my speedometer which read 150 kmph. All drivers follow strict lane discipline which is quite admirable.

We made it to Hotel Movenpick, Amsterdam at 8.15 pm, exactly 12 hours since we started in the morning.

Dinner was at Ganesha restaurant.
