Day 53 - Amsterdam

Day 53 Wednesday October 5

Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum.

Walking near the canals of Amsterdam, there are 88 of them with more than a thousand bridges across them. We saw the Central station from where trains leave and arrive from all over Europe. We learned some history about the city and The Netherlands from our local guide. We walked along the main shopping street and saw the stock exchange, some churches, the usual Royal Palace, flower market and Anne Frank's house which was closed for some reason.

The cycles and the cyclists are a sight to see. Amsterdam has more cycles than any other city in the world. There are dedicated cycle lanes and they have priority over all other modes of transport. Anyone and everyone uses them to ride to work or go from one place to another. I saw people eating, drinking and using their mobile phones while riding. Hundreds of cycles were parked outside the station.

We had lunch at Sarvanna Bhavan and took the tram to come back to the hotel.
